As tensions increase in the South China Sea, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reaching out to overseas Vietnamese to enlist their support. Recently the Ministry organized a 10 day trip for them to visit the highly disputed area surrounding the Spratly Islands (Truong Sa) which lie off the South Central coast of Vietnam. The large island network is also claimed by Malaysia, the Phillipines, China and Brunei.
NOI Pictures’ contributing photographer Pham Ngoc Lan joined the 50 overseas Vietnamese and 150 others including journalists, soldiers, monks etc. to document the excursion. The group explored the islands, oil rigs and participated in a memorial ceremony for patriotic martyrs who lost their lives during the clash between China and Vietnam in the 1970-80s. While these trips are organized 15-18 times per year for Vietnamese nationals, this is the first trip for overseas Vietnamese.
